Additional Information & Description

Ca’ Rezzonico Museum opens a window onto the lavish lives of wealthy Venetians in a palazzo on the Grand Canal. Its opulent halls bring the tastes of the Republic’s final years into focus, with the palace itself forming part of the visit rather than simply housing the collection.

A palace shaped by Venetian ambition

Baldassare Longhena, the leading architect of the Venetian Baroque era, designed Ca’ Rezzonico for the Bon family in 1649. The building is a striking example of Venetian Baroque and Rococo architecture. Walking through its interiors gives you a setting in which to understand those styles: grand rooms built for display, with decoration integral to the spaces you enter.

The Rezzonico family’s world

The wealthy Rezzonico banker family acquired the canal-side palace in 1751. A few years later, the family patriarch, Carlo Rezzonico, became Pope Clement XIII. The museum explores the art, furniture, tastes and fashions collected and once displayed by the family, connecting the rooms to the people who made this residence an expression of their wealth and status.

Frescoes, tapestries and furniture

The intricately frescoed ballroom is a reason to look beyond individual objects and take in an entire interior. Elsewhere, carefully curated Baroque and Rococo pieces, tapestries and furniture give substance to the museum’s account of Venetian luxury. These decorative works make the visit more than an architectural tour: they reveal what wealthy households chose to surround themselves with.
