Additional Information & Description
Galleria Borbonica takes you beneath Naples on the “Street of Memories”, a guided route through spaces that reveal how the city used its underground world across several centuries. The appeal is concrete: you move through places shaped by quarrying, water storage and the need for refuge, rather than viewing that history only through exhibits.
Stone that helped build Naples
The route takes you into old caves dating from the 16th century, where workers extracted tuff stone for some of Naples’ buildings. These excavated spaces connect the city below ground with the construction above it. Seeing the caves gives the building material a setting of its own: this part of the visit focuses on where the stone came from, before the route continues deeper underground.
Wartime finds and a restored shelter
The tour begins in the basement of Palazzo Serra di Cassano, with a small museum displaying historical finds from the Second World War. Further along the route, you reach a restored 17th-century water tank that was later used as a wartime bomb shelter. The exhibits and the shelter bring two different kinds of evidence into the visit: collected objects from the period and an underground space adapted to protect people during air raids.
A passage built for the Bourbon king
The final stretch leads through the Bourbon Tunnel. Ferdinand II of Bourbon had this underground passage built in 1853 to connect the Royal Palace with Naples’ military barracks as a potential escape route. Walking through it adds a royal and military chapter to the tour, distinct from the earlier quarrying and water-storage spaces.
