Additional Information & Description
The Altar of the Fatherland brings Rome into view from above, with a 360-degree panorama from the top of its vast marble monument. A glass elevator carries you to the viewing terrace, giving this visit a distinctive focus: seeing the city’s skyline from a vantage point high above Piazza Venezia.
A terrace overlooking ancient Rome
From the terrace, look out towards the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. The churches of Rome’s historic centre also form part of the panorama, bringing ancient landmarks and the city’s religious architecture into the same view. Take photographs of the cityscape and the monument itself, or pause for a selfie with Rome spread out behind you.
The monument behind the view
Also known as the Vittoriano or Victor Emmanuel II Monument, the Altar of the Fatherland is dedicated to Victor Emmanuel II. Construction began at the end of the 19th century, and the giant marble structure was completed in 1925. Its two spectacular quadrigas conceal the elevated viewing terrace. The Italian name, Altare della Patria, translates as “Altar of the Fatherland”.
Three skip-the-line admissions
Your ticket includes skip-the-line access to the glass elevator, Palazzo Venezia and the Museum of the Risorgimento. These admissions extend the visit beyond the rooftop view, with entry to a palace and a museum alongside the ascent. An Ancient Rome multimedia video is also included, adding a separate audiovisual element to the experience.
Commentary on your smartphone
The Rome city audio guide app provides commentary on your smartphone, including information to accompany your time taking in the scenery. It is available in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. This is not a guided tour, and audio guides for Palazzo Venezia and the Museum of the Risorgimento are not included.
